Owning over 350 domain names and having hosted with dozens of hosting companies since 2002 I wanted to share my experience (as well as the experience of real customers to these hosting companies) with others who are seeking this information. While many of these companies offer “similar” services they are most definitely NOT the same.
Some hosting companies offer terrible customer service, something I feel (and you should too) is very important when rating a web host. Some hosts offers tons of advanced features for reasonable fees while other focus on rock bottom prices. I hope you find this site helpful in choosing a web site host that is right for you and your next web project.
Godaddy.com Hosting
Godaddy offer rock bottom prices on various type of hosting accounts including shared hosting, vps (virtual private servers), semi dedicated servers and fully managed servers. Go daddy is the world’s largest ICANN-accredited domain name registrar and they excel in helping customers manage “domain names”. If your looking a solid company to house your domain names I can attest to Godaddy, I currently have over 350 domains with Godaddy.com and have never had any negative experiences.
However when it comes to hosting I prefer NOT to host with godaddy and here are the reasons why:
- No Cpanel
- Can Not Edit Htaccess File
- Interface Is Designed To Sell You More Stuff … (even after you have logged in)
Does this mean Godaddy is not a good hosting company for you? Maybe not, they are very cheap and do offer 24/7 phone support, however as an advanced webmaster who needs cpanel and the ability to edit my htaccess file they just do not work well for me. If your just getting started and do not need these features Godaddy is a fine choice.

Host Monster a sister company to BlueHost.com (a company that has been around for many years and has a thriving business). Host Monster is well suited for personal type sites with less traffic and offers very cheap linux hosting plans that include an amazing amount of features such as 600 gigs of disk storage space per month, 6,000 gigs bandwidth per month, 5000 e-mail accounts, unlimited domains, unlimited subdomains, 24/7 network monitoring, 24/7 Email support, POP3/IMAP Email Access, MySQL, PHP, Python, FrontPage 2000 with ‘02 and ‘03 extensions, Custom Cronjobs, SSH (shell access), OS Commerce Shopping Cart, and SSL support. For $5.95 a month and 600 gigs of disk space a month, Hostmonster is sort of like the McDonald’s of the internet.

I have been a hostgator customer myself now for two or three years, they are an excellent company to work with and they come highly recommended.
Hostgator.com offers Linux hosting plans, which are comically named Hatchling, Baby, and Swamp. The features vary depending on what your hosting needs are. The Hatchling plan starts at about $5 a month and the prices go up slightly from there, and mainly differ with regards as to how much disk space, bandwidth and number of domains you are looking for. Basic plans have a set monthly fee and Hostgator will even let you go month to month. Your domain name is free and the initial set up is free as well. Along with unlimited FTP and POP3 accounts, addon/parked domains, sub domains, and MySQL databases, you kind of have to wonder how they are able to do this for such a low price.
Hostgator.com is probably the most user-friendly services in the top ten hosting providers on the internet. A lot of companies provide resource libraries, but they can be hard to use for “Hatchling” webmasters. Hostgator not only provides demos so that users know what they are purchasing at the time of sign-up, but they also have visual demonstrations in the form of flash movies that are specifically helpful for someone who is pulling together their first website. They also use cPanel for their control panel, which is the icon based control panel that anyone can use.

iPowerWeb.com
While ipowerweb.com is changing and upgrading, ipowerweb reviews from individual users aren’t always that positive. Also, ipower web hosting doesn’t use cpanel, which can cause the occasionally negative ipower web review as well. Instead, they use vDeck 3 for their control panel and that has a few customers disgruntled. This may be because they don’t know how to work with the different features of vdeck 3, because it designed for more advanced webmasters and not for people who are comfortable using cpanel, which is easier to use on a daily basis.

The domain 1and1.com was first registered in the late summer of 1997, they have been doing business since I have been online (about the same year).
While the prices are very competitive at 1 and 1 their customer service seams to be lacking, many costumers have posted issues about poor customer service (something that is very important when evaluating hosting companies).
